Live from Melbourne Australia, we bring you an Italian beer from Zingarella restaurant. The pizza, I must say was much better than then beer, and the wait staff was mostly young Italians with real accents. Being Italian myself it was kinda like visiting relatives.
As I looked at the label I was intrigued to see that this was actually not an Italian beer, but it is locally brewed in Australia “under the supervision of” Peroni. This is similar to the setup that Budweiser is brewed in Canada, with the difference being Canadians actually improved Budweiser, making it stronger, and better tasting than the American one.
This beer had a terrible head, and bitter, watery flavour. It was really not good. On the plus side, it was not so bad that I had to spit it out.

As you may have read in one of my earlier entries, it wasn’t until 2009 that Lion Nathan Brewing made a commitment to producing natural beer, by making some (yes, SOME) of their beers free of artificial preservatives or additives.
Since I am a frequent visitor to WA, and have had the displeasure of drinking Swan Lager with a polite smile… (I lie, I am never polite)…. this news was huge to me, and in 2010 I finally got the chance to try the re-incarnation of this legendary Australian Beer.
Just to see the tag “No Preservatives” on the label made me blush with pride. As the nation catches on , the words are seen on more labels everywhere. Will it catch on? Is it just a fad? Probably. We will see, but I hope the people get educated and start to choose healthier beer, and better yet, demand that their brewers stop producing un-natural beer (or as I call it, “piss”).
This turned out to be a solid session beer. I tried it while down south in Dunsborough, in South West Australia. I liked that it came in a big bottle, I always like that. The weather and scenery was absolutely beautiful and I went for a walk with my wife and 8 month old son.
It is fly season though. If you know what fly season is like in south-west Australia, then you may know I was probably not in the best mood when I rated this beer. Luckily our pram has a net, so my son did not get eaten.
The head on this beer wasn’t very good, and it has a very mild aroma. It has a drying mouthfeel and slight bitter aftertaste. This is a good mild beer that will appeal to everybody.
It’s mild citrus taste is clean and crisp and refreshing and is a great beer to drink all day when it is warm.
Impressive session beer, and one of maybe ten pf beers in Australia.
this one lost marks for having poor head and very little body, but is otherwise very drinkable and refreshing.

If you are in Fremantle, Australia, one of the best places to party is Little Creatures Brewery. It is a huge warehouse-style building along the water, complete with a tin roof and huge patio. Out back there is even a big party tent with great water views. The only beer worth drinking is Little Creatures Pale Ale (illustrated but not rated). The rest of the beer is not preservative free, and is therefore “piss.”
