Harvester Brewing Dark Ale is the Quintessential Portland Beer

Untitled

Ah, the wonderful city of Portland.  The longer I am away from it, the more perfect it becomes in my mind.   Sure, it’s full of hippies, but look past that!  The people have a positivity about them.  It is like they are all on the same page.  Environment? Check!  None of this bullshit where flat-earthers tell them to “stop building transit” and  “fuck recycling, it’s a waste of time.”  Portland don’t play that!  Portland has no doubt.  Like it… or get out.

Portland is a city of progress, art, nature, and granola.

If you take the character of the city of Portland and put it in a bottle, you would get something like Harvester Brewing Dark Ale.  It is the quintessential Portland beer… or at least it should be.

A nice dark beer on Hawthorne on a summer evening, stressing about my 26 final exams, trying to escape… looking at the flickering lights of the Baghdad Theatre… Smelling pizza that I could hardly afford… This was Portland for me.

As I look at the belgian lace left on my pint glass on my desk, I am almost teleported back to that time, a nice time.  Not as nice as now, but nonetheless, a nice time.

This dark ale is a real treat, and the faint of heart should not shy away from it.  It has a smooth sweet taste.  The colour is a dark rich red.  It has excellent, persistent head.  There is an intense caramel aroma and caramel and liqueur taste.  The aftertaste lingers only for a few moments.

The intensity smooths out even more as you finish it, and the oatmeal taste begins to surface.

This is clean-tasting with excellent flavour, and a lot of personality.

Harvester Brewing IPA 2

Untitled

Harvester Brewing IPA 2 is made in my former home of Portland, Oregon. This completely gluten-free brewery and gastropub has recently changed its name to Groundbreaker Brewing. It calls to me! I would love to visit someday, but in the meantime, a bottle of their IPA 2 has made it into my living room.

It has a lively head with medium duration. The floral aroma is moderately strong and slightly bitter. The taste has a moderately intense bitterness (60 ibu).

There is a slight burnt chestnut aftertaste, but if you have ever had a bad chestnut… Its a little like that. The alcohol percentage is 6%. The foam caresses the side of the glass like torn lace, with a slim body.

My wife was drinking Four Winds IPA, and I tried a sip in a “head to head.” Four winds is better, too bad I cant drink it.

Harvester (Groundbreaker) Brewing IPA 2 is a delightful IPA, and the best GF IPA I have tried.

Schnitzer Bräu

Schnitzer Brau

This is a great find that was suggested to be by a guy in Nesters Liquor store in Whistler.

Schnitz is made in the black forest in Offenburg, near the french border, near Strasbourg.

Translated from their website:

“Schnitzer Bräu is gluten-free . We use bears solely of naturally gluten-free raw materials and malts.”

Not only is this an amazing treat, but it is made using bears… Impressive.

“For us, it goes without saying that our clients receive organic products that are not loaded with synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides. ”

Somewhere in Germany, a bunch of guys read my blog and started an organic gluten free brewery. Then they named it something that was not stupid and obvious like “Glutenburg” (although that must have been hard to resist), and instead named it something that reminds you of the greatest movie of all time, “Beerfest.”

Was that so hard?

Just for Schnitz and giggles, I would have liked to make a “Hitler makes a gluten free brewery” video here, but I just do not have the time for that. It would have been hilarious, trust me!

Schnitzer Is proof that you can have great craftsmanship with alternative ingredients. The head was good with moderate duration, and the mouthfeel was full with great body. The taste was mld in intensity and slightly floral, like what you would expect from a German pilsner.

Schnitzer also has a perfect 5% alcohol. The score for this goes without saying.
